Richard Hartlage – Designer, Collector, Gardener

Even before visiting Richard Hartlage’s luscious, eclectic garden in Seattle, I felt I’d known him for years. In fact, every time I turned a corner at the Toronto Botanical Garden in June, he was there in the beautiful flowers of the shrub that greeted me, Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’.  

That plant was the result of a cross made by Richard Hartlage in 1991, while an undergrad student at North Carolina State University, between white-flowered Chinese sweetshrub Calycanthus chinensis with its large tepals and camellia-like blooms and the American native Carolina allspice C. floridus, with its strap-like tepals and strawberry-grapefruit scent. (At one time, it was considered a bigeneric cross, since the Chinese species, originally named Calycanthus chinensis in 1963 was renamed Sinocalycanthus in 1964, but in 1979 it was moved back into Calycanthus.) The hybrid name honours the late J.C. Raulston (1940-1996) who was then director of the NCSU Arboretum, later named the JC Raulston Arboretum.  (I photographed C. chinensis at the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia and C. floridus at the Royal Botanical Garden in Burlington, Ontario.)

A beautifully-rounded shrub, the flowers are sterile, so new plants must be made through layering or softwood cuttings. Though not as perfumed as Carolina allspice, ‘Hartlage Wine’ has a slight fragrance. The leathery leaves turn yellow in fall.

More than 30 years later, Richard Hartlage is still in love with plants of all kinds. That much was clear, arriving at his house, below, in the Montake area of Seattle as I did this July with my fellow gardeners on our annual Garden Fling. He calls his house colour ‘vermilion’ and I love it; there is much-too-much conformity and conservatism in the world of exterior colour choices. (I read in a Seattle Times story by Lorene Edwards Forkner that the hue is echoed in a massive spring tulip display.) An indigo-purple portico with a bold street number frames the front door. And those steps? Chunky granite slabs, then aluminum tread!

Who’s heard of using aluminum in a residential setting? So it’s clear that there’s an innovative hardscaping mind at work here, even as the diverse plant palette suggests someone who is enamored with flora, fragrance… and fun.

And, of course, as the CEO and President of the 12-person design firm (not counting his 4 schanuzers) Land Morphology, Hartlage’s home garden is his experimental laboratory. His history in gardening and design is deep. In the late 80s, he was plant propagator at North Carolina’s famous Montrose Garden, followed by stints at other NC gardens. He was Morris County Parks Commissioner in Morristown New Jersey in charge of two arboretums before moving to Seattle in 1996 to become Director/Curator of the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden, where he introduced the Great Plant Picks program during his 7-year tenure there. Beginning in 2003, he spent 10 years with the large design/engineering firm AHBL as an associate principle managing the landscape architecture group before launching Land Morphology in 2013. Projects include numerous residential designs (including Stephen Colbert and other New Jersey clients like the Mountsier Estate); Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle; the new Herb Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden; and a new Castle Garden at Yew Dell Botanical Garden down the street from Hartlage’s Crestwood, Kentucky childhood home. Just completed is the impressive planting design for Seattle’s new 26-block Waterfront Park, in collaboration with architect Field Operations (High Line-NY, Navy Pier-Chicago), featuring more than 124,000 plants representing over 500 varieties of natives and ornamentals.

A few months after our visit, there were railings on those aluminum stairs above and an airy, iron arbor over the upper walkway (more vertical gardening opportunity) – topped by heraldic schnauzers in the place of lions!

Back to my July visit now, on either side of the steps that lead to the house on the steeply-sloped property is a serpentine hedge of Korean boxwood (Buxus sinica var. insularis ‘Wintergreen’). Suffice to say I’ve photographed countless boxwood hedges over the decades – including the spectacular potager at France’s Villandry – but this is the only one I’ve seen that meanders like an undulating green paintbrush across a slope. In its midst are lilies, alliums, ornamental grasses, persicaria and perennial geranium.

Spent allium seedheads are left to create texture and interest, along with deep-purple drumstick alliums (A. sphaerocephalon).

Scented lilies, alstroemeria and hydrangeas are part of the summer plant palette, along with perfumed Gladiolus murielae in the clay pot.

A spectacular lily that might be the Orienpet (Oriental x Trumpet) hybrid ‘Debby’.

A massive terracotta pot serves as focal point on the slope terrace.

Spears of gladiolus pop up here and there. These ones look like direct descendants of G. dalenii.

Luscious, light-blue mophead hydrangeas (H. macrophylla) partner with Taiwanese schefflera (Heptapleurum taiwanianum) and lilies in front of the house.

The back garden, though small, was filled to the gills with interesting and textural plants, myriad containers, whimsical furnishings…. and loads of people! So if my photos tend to be vignettes, be assured that the overall view was fabulous. I noticed that metal grid screens and hanging basket frames seemed to be occuping an aerial dimension – in part, perhaps, to screen out the view of neighbours.

As someone who has painted her neighbour’s property-line garage wall (with permission) to become her own garden backdrop, I liked that the same arrangement seems to have happened here, with interesting materials. And amidst myriad containers, an attractive rectangular trough brings the reflective magic of water to the garden, including waterlilies and….

…. a retro spring-rider playground duck configured as a fountain peeking out of the sedges and rushes!

Nearby is a spring rider seahorse, its platinum finish reminding me of the silvery Adonis mannequin in Andrew Bunting’s Swarthmore garden which I wrote about last year. The hardscape in the Hartlage back garden is a mixture of rectangular granite pavers and grit forming walkways amidst planting beds and containers crammed with plants of all kinds.

And a crevice garden! I’ve photographed the crevice garden in the back of Carol Shinn’s Fort Collins,  Colorado garden and Zdeněk Zvolánek’s masterpiece for the Montreal Botanical Garden but a Corten container crevice garden was new to me, and quite wonderful.

And what is the unconquered, unplanted frontier in almost every garden? That’s right: the driveway. So leave it to Richard Hartlage to boldly go where few have ventured – right down the middle of his concrete driveway. I love this idea.

In Katerina Georgi’s Garden

When I went ‘botanizing’ in Greece this autumn with the North American Rock Garden Society and guide Liberto Dario (Eleftherios Dariotis), I was delighted to be invited into a garden that evokes both the local agricultural vernacular and a romantic, rugged sense of place.  Surrounded by olive-studded hillsides with the long-spined Mount Taygetus at its back and the sparkling Messenian Gulf at its feet, it represents that hard-to-achieve marriage of clean lines and pure poetry. Let’s walk down the narrow lane towards designer Katerina Georgi’s place in the Aghia Sophia area near Kardamyli.

Her home is surrounded by drystone walls which, in the Peloponnese, are a pervasive part of the landscape, defining ancient wheat terraces and stepped olive groves and marking age-old perimeters of family properties. There is just so much rock here and no need for mortar in constructing these walls, a technique called “en xiro”. Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) and jasmine soften the edges and perfume the air.

Come closer and you see that the drystone walls create the perfect enclosure for a raised gravel parking pad and a sexy little red car.  Even here, you can see that the property – at 200 metres (656 feet) above sea level – is a series of elevation changes following the hillside from the mountain down to the seashore.

Let’s go through the lovely tile-roofed gate that frames the stepping-stone axis leading to the stone stairs of the house. The gate’s teal-blue wash is in keeping with much of the quiet blue-purple-gray-green palette in this garden, which depends more on foliage and form than flowers and colour. Nevertheless, reflecting the blues of the Ionian sea nearby, I found….

….. Ceratostigma plumbaginoides and Plumbago capensis in flower this early November day. (And when we meet her, it’s easy to see she does love blue.)

I’m quite sure most of us would take pains to line up each rectangular paver perfectly to match the next one – but how much more interesting a journey when they’re staggered ever so gently! We’ll go up the stairs to the terrace in a moment, but let’s meet Katerina Georgi first.

Born in London, she trained and worked as an interior designer for various practices before setting up her own consultancy there. After studying and working with the renowned John Brookes (1933-2018), she expanded into garden design. Since moving to Greece 26 years ago, her focus has been on the design and renovation of old, stone houses like her own and the creation of drought-tolerant Mediterranean gardens. Not surprisingly, she has played an active role in the Peloponnese Branch of the Mediterranean Garden Society here, along with her friend and our guide Liberto.

Let’s listen to him introduce Katerina and find out more from her about the garden.

As Katerina said, when she bought this house in 2009 it had no running water, sanitation or electricity. Its previous owner was a single man who lived a Spartan, solitary life: keeping goats, gathering water from a spring below the house, cooking his meals in an open fireplace and often carrying a shotgun (which did not endear him to the community). The good news? The goats had left a valuable supply of well-rotted manure which Katerina laboriously relocated to keep it from being contaminated during the building process. When I visit the guest room – the former goat shed – to have a glass of water, I am surprised to find his photo in a wall niche. Says Katerina: “I like the idea of continuity, so his photo is a link with the history of the house.”

Katerina began renovation work in the spring of 2010, excavating out the lower level of the house and using the sandstone spoil as the base for planting beds nearby and as a granular additive to poured cement to bring the paving colour and consistency closer to the stone house. You can see this treatment in the pavers of the raised terrace on the right as you enter the garden, with its small fig tree, a splash of bougainvillea……

….. and potato bush (Solanum rantonnetii).

There are carefully-chosen plants everywhere, including these grasses softening the house wall.

To the left of the gate as you enter, down a few steps and hidden behind a bower of rosemary buzzing with honey bees…..

…… and myrtle-leaved milkwort or September bush (Polygala myrtifolia)……

…… is a sheltered sitting area under a pergola with comfy teak furniture – and those stunning rock walls. Serenity is clearly the mood here.  For me, the various seating areas – and there are quite a few in this garden – bring to mind Katerina’s mentor John Brookes, who himself espoused the philosophy of California landscape architect Thomas Church. “Gardens are for people.”   This garden is most definitely for people, and the plants play a useful but secondary role.

It’s difficult to decide whether to climb up the house steps or head down into the garden but let’s go upstairs to the terrace around the house and get our bearings. Here we look back at the gate and driveway.  I love the lushness just a few containers bring to a setting like this.

Now look south. Though I can’t make out details, I can tell you that there are a lot of olive trees on that hillside, for Kardamyli is very close to Kalamata – and if it weren’t for this region, Greek salads the world over would be very sad indeed.

Let’s walk along the terrace to the dining table. Here’s the view down the hill out over the little church of Aghia Sophia west to the sea. The church gives its name to this small village.

Summer temperatures here on the Mani Peninsula are hot so plants in pots need to be especially tough. These lovely succulents fit that bill. Gutters direct rainwater from the roof into an underground cistern; in hot periods, that water can be pumped into needy areas of the garden.

Looking down towards the garden, below, and what Katerina calls a “series of amphiteatrical steps” leading to a naturally-filtered swimming pool, we see Mediterranean plants she has selected for year-round interest and their ability to survive drought. The soil for the planting beds came largely from the level below near the old olive and fig trees. And we see how the various garden and sitting areas are informed by grid, another John Brookes tenet. As Robin Lane Fox wrote in his column eulogizing Brookes:  “His drawings applied a simple ‘grid system’ to each site, basing it on proportions he found in the house or the main rooms inside. He insisted that this grid unified a garden and helped its designs to flow.”

Going down the stairs, we see another criterion Katerina looks for in plants, “…growth habit – specifically the plants’ ability to spread and soften the edges of the hard landscaping.”

To give cohesion and continuity to the design, she repeats key plants like lavender, teucrium, santolina and rosemary. Terracotta accents repeat as well.

A ‘Grassy Lassie’ aloe picks up the orange tones nicely.

Past the last cloud of blue plumbago, we’re almost down to the pool level.

I adore the hardscape treatments and the careful consideration of colour and the size of the aggregate between the pavers. They add so much to the landscape here.

Now we come to the enticing swimming pool, surrounded by figs and olive trees with the evocative Mani landscape in the background. Though it looks like a conventional pool, there is no chlorine treatment here. As Katerina says:  “The pool is filtered by a skimmer (complete with its own lizard ladder), a sand filter, which fixes the phosphates, and another bio-filter which traps particles in a series of mats.” Katerina believes this system is the first of its kind in Greece.

Just another perfect detail.

The lowest terrace hews closest to the property’s origins with an old stone aloni or grain-threshing floor as the centrepiece. Says Katerina: “Clearly many years had passed since it had been used to thresh wheat and, over time, a layer of soil containing assorted bulbs had built up, so that the rock was barely visible. This excess soil was stripped off to reveal the rock, and the bulbs replanted. Thyme is gradually being introduced and this will eventually spread and fill the fissures in the bedrock.”  Planting in the low part of the garden was begun in the autumn of 2014. The intention is to keep it looking natural so it blends with the landscape beyond and allows easy access for olive picking.

Viewed from the lower level, we see the aloni’s round contour mirrored in a new, curved, stone retaining wall, with new steps….

….. built on either side to connect the two levels.

And back towards the house, another perfect little seating area.

There are abundant wildflowers in spring on the lower level. When they’re in bloom, she cuts a path through them to allow circulation until they die down and the entire area can be cut back with a string-trimmer. Now, in November, cyclamen is in flower. I ask Katerina if she uses the fruit of the cactus pear tree or “fragosyka” (Opuntia ficus-indica) which we’ve seen growing wild troughout the Mani. “I don’t use the prickly pears,” she says “as I find the flavour very bland, and not worth effort of cleaning them, but one of the locals sometimes comes and picks them”. A final look around the old part of the garden with its rustic gate opening…

… and we head up the stairs. I spy a rough plank bench in a niche with French lavender nestled against it, and I think how lovely it would be to sit there on a summer’s day as the warmth of the Mani sun traps the fragrance. And I note the perfect cascading burro’s tail (Sedum morganianum) and the allium seedheads at a door, a memory from another season in a beautiful Greek garden that honours memory and celebrates place.

Kellie O’Brien’s English Garden in Hinsdale

The same August day that the Garden Writers Association (GWA) visited Susan Beard’s garden in suburban Oak Grove, Illinois, in Chicago’s western suburbs, which I wrote about in a recent blog, we were also treated to a stop at the Hinsdale garden of Kellie O’Brien.  We got our first peek through the boughs of a crabapple, part of the large mixed border surrounding her front lawn.

As befits Kellie’s design/contracting company, English Gardens, and the architecture of her home, the garden style here was formal, with clipped hedges containing all the ebullience of the borders, including many hydrangeas.  And there were lots of conifers to give interest during Chicago’s long winters.

But Kellie is known for her masterful touch with tropical plants that enjoy Chicago’s warm, humid summers. Have a look at this container with colocasia, chartreuse sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas ‘Margarita’), coleus and other foliage plants…..

….. and another nearby containing a tree-form angel’s trumpet (Brugmansia).

We headed to the back garden to meet Kellie. As I walked past this windowbox featuring magenta-leaved Persian shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus), silvery licorice plant (Helichrysum petiolare), trailing purple heart (Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’) and silver ponyfoot (Dichondra argentea ‘Silver Falls’), it was clear that she had a deft touch with subtle colour combinations.

We walked down the flagstone path beside her house…..

….and in the back found more containers stuffed with colourful caladiums, coleus and other tropical delights…..

…. and an enclosed bed containing big-leafed alocasia.

There was a lion’s head fountain nestled in climbing hydrangea (H. anomala ssp. petiolaris)…..

….. and a seating area set into lush plantings of ferns, tropicals and beautifully-displayed container plants……

…. like that popular houseplant mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata), displayed as a stunning centrepiece surrounded by yellow lantana and a charteuse sedge.

There were more containers arrayed around the terrace. I loved the yellow allamanda mixed with pink begonias in this one, also featuring canna and alocasia….

Kellie had set up a patio table with refreshments for us, including iced red hibiscus tea. And she’d arranged one of the prettiest floral tablescapes I’ve ever seen, with green hydrangea blossoms set atop hosta leaves.

Then she took a few moments to tell us about the garden and her history of getting into garden design. She mentioned that the garden was often used to host fundraising events for the school that she started in Tanzania, the O’Brien School for the Maasai. As we sipped our drinks, she related how it had come about.

In 2006, Kellie and her daughter, Heather, traveled to Tanzania to go on safari, climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and volunteer at a convent in Sanya Juu.  While there, they asked the Sisters for any other projects they could help with.  The Mother Superior at the time, Sister Dona, told them: “There is a Maasai man named Gabriel who keeps coming to us asking to help his village with a school.”  When they visited the village, they were greeted by 150 members of the Maasai tribe.  A few men stood before Kellie and offered their most prized possession, their land, to her if she vowed to build a school for their children. As Kellie looked around at the many children who were at home during school hours, she and her daughter knew what they must do.  They discovered that their real purpose of their trip to Africa was to give the children of that village hope for the future. Ten days later, they returned to the village and designed the school on the back of an envelope.  When they left Tanzania just two days later, concrete blocks and sand were already in place to begin construction.  They are now at their student capacity of 420, ninety percent of whom are Maasai, and celebrate graduating classes each year.

Our thirst quenched, it was time to explore the back garden, via a beautiful cobble pathway through shade plantings…

…where an island bed (or maybe ‘peninsula bed’ is a better term) extended into the lawn….

…. and featured beautifully-grown hostas under the shade of big trees.

But Kellie isn’t only about tropicals and manicured hedges in her garden. She had a lovely little potager at the very back, its paths mulched with straw dampened from the rain, and vegetables growing in abundance….

…. including cherry tomatoes tied to handsome stakes.

Then it was time to say goodbye. And this is a good time to say “Thank you” to all those people, like Kellie, who generously open their gardens to passionate fellow gardeners so we can look and learn and enjoy.

In the Garden with Barbara & Howard Katz

Barbara Katz and I became Facebook friends a few years back, drawn to each other by our mutual love of colour combinations in plant design and also our great admiration for Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. In fact, it was on Barbara’s recommendation and with her introduction that Piet was commissioned to design a meadow garden for Delaware Botanic Gardens, being planted this fall. So it was with great anticipation that I made plans to attend the 2017 Garden Bloggers’ Fling in the Washington DC Capitol Region, a 3-day event that included a tour of Barbara & Howard Katz’s Bethesda, Maryland garden. We even decided to have dinner in a Washington restaurant before the tour, meeting face to face for the first time. (Our husbands got along famously too!)  And when our bus pulled up on Barbara’s street a few days later, it was easy to see which house was theirs for Barbara and Howard, an architect, were there waiting to welcome us.

But even if they hadn’t been out front, we would have known the house. Their luscious front garden (below) presented a welcome right at the street with a generous bed of summer perennials, carex grasses and succulents arrayed around an old ‘Halka’ honeylocust tree. Barbara, who has 30 years experience in garden design with her company London Lanscapes LLC, said that this bed, installed in mid-April while creating a new flagstone path, gave the front a needed facelift and some interest and pleasure for passersby. It was also a way to reduce the amount of front lawn and provide a buffer against dogs and snow.  But most important, as a plantswoman: “I needed MORE space to play with plants.”  Not surprisingly for a designer who knows how to use colour, there is a clever and subtle use of red flowers in this garden – the gaillardia at front and the echinacea in the rear – that carries the eye up and back toward the red chairs on the porch, the oxblood-red door, the red window shutters and even the Japanese maple.

Barbara worked the soil in the street garden to make it free-draining. “It gets baked in the afternoon,” she said, “So now I can use plants I hadn’t been able to before” (like the yuccas, below).

The veranda, below, is everything a good front porch should be: an attractive welcome for visitors, a well-appointed anteroom to the house itself and a place to relax comfortably with a view of the garden and street. Too often we restrict our seating areas to the privacy of a back yard where none of the neighbours can spot us reading a newspaper or sipping a glass of wine. But why?  A covered veranda is a sanctuary in the rain and obviously has a completely different outlook on life (and the neighbourhood) than the sitting areas we create out of view. Let’s tote up the good things about Howard’s and Barbara’s version. But first of all, a little background. When Barbara first saw this house, it was as a designer for the owner, who would have her redo the entire garden, including the complex topographical challenge at the back (more on that later). The year was 1995; the garden was installed in 1996. Fast forward six years and the house was for sale and Barbara and Howard bought it, including the garden she’d designed, worked with over the years, and come to love. As for the veranda, it was bigger then, with small wooden posts and railing, and a concrete bases and steps. Howard needed an office, so they took half the veranda and incorporated it into the house; removed the railing; used Azek (a plastic-wood product) to make the posts chunkier; rebuilt the steps to give them generous 18-inch treads with stone risers; then refaced everything with stone veneer. Add some Arts & Crafts lights, pots of easy-care succulents (can we get a cheer for iron plant stands?), a few handsome pieces of sculpture; and comfy chairs and it’s one of the prettiest makeovers ever.

All the succulent containers, by the way, are Howard’s creations. He was born in South Africa where many succulents are native; they add their own textural note to Barbara’s herbaceous side of the ledger.

Wouldn’t you like to fall asleep in one of these Adirondack rockers? And another little colour tip, courtesy of the glazed green pots (as devotees of the artist’s colour wheel know): red and green are complementary contrasts and they always combine nicely with each other. I can only imagine how beautiful this foundation planting must look as the Japanese maples turn colour in autumn!

The back garden is where the challenge lay for Barbara when she first saw it more than two decades ago. With a 12-foot elevation change from the back door up to the property line, it called for creative terracing. In the photo below, (when I got home, I realized I didn’t have a workable shot of the slope and asked Barbara to take a photo, which shows one side), you can see how beautifully the rich tapestry of perennials and low evergreens creates a frame for the cascading water feature.

I’m not sure how many people would take note of this small detail, but for me it stood out as a superb way of disguising the necessary nuts-and-bolts of slope retention. The concrete block wall between the Katz property and the one behind them has been stained dark green – and presto! it vanishes. Well, except for the sweet little plaque to pretty it up. That airy iron trellis above it is Howard Katz’s effort to keep leaf-munching deer from leaping from the neighbour’s garden into theirs.

But the big focal point in the back garden is the terraced water feature. From the stone patio behind the house, this is what it looks like gazing up the slope.

There are tropical waterlilies in the pool at the bottom, and goldfish.

Climb back up those stairs a little, and you see how it courses down the rocks, mimicking a natural waterfall….

…with a bubbling fountain in the very highest pool, below. Barbara wanted the effect of a series of birdbaths down the slope and it worked perfectly, since the Katz garden is now on the migration route of myriad birds, both spring and fall.

I would have loved to linger a little, perhaps in the comfy seating near the house. Doesn’t the soft kiwi green look gorgeous with the sage green of the wall?
